aecync 01 — handheld navigator
Off grid. On course.
A handheld navigator that clips to your pack. Position, elevation and heading, with no phone and no signal.

Field test 014 — Adirondacks, NY
The phone died at 1,900 m. Nine kilometres left to walk.
Six of us, one paper map between two groups, and a device that had been clipped to a pack strap for two days without being touched. That is the whole product brief.
Out there
Clip it on. Forget it.
It lives on the outside of the pack, in reach without stopping, and it tells you three things when you look down.

On the strap
Clipped where you can see it
The carabiner takes a strap, a belt loop or a haul line, and the screen stays readable while it hangs.

In the hand
One hand, gloves on
Small enough to hold with a pole in the other hand, and worked by three buttons you can find without looking.
347° NNW
Compass
Know which way you face
A three-axis magnetometer points north when you stand still and GPS heading gives up.
What it does — tap any of these to open the 3D view
Field notes
Sent in by people using it.
Fog came in above the dam and the trail markers stopped making sense. The breadcrumb line put us back at the junction in twenty minutes.
Sarah K. — Adirondacks, NY
I use it on the water. It has been rained on, dropped on a deck and left in a wet bag overnight, and it still holds a fix faster than my chartplotter.
Marc D. — Georgian Bay, ON
The pressure alert went off an hour before anything looked wrong. We were back at the hut when the storm arrived.

About
Made for the walk back.
aecync started with a dead phone on a ridge and a long guess about which way the car was. We wanted one object that does the few things you actually need when the map runs out.
So we built the smallest thing that answers three questions: where am I, how high am I, and which way am I facing. Everything else was left out on purpose.

The parts

The screen
Readable in the sun
A 1.9″ transflective panel that gets clearer as the light gets harder, and never switches itself off.

The clip
Rated to 12 kN
A forged carabiner machined into the body, not bolted on. It holds a pack strap or a haul line.

The buttons
Three, and no menus
Mark, scroll and back. Raised far enough to find with gloves on and stiff enough not to press in a bag.

The body
Sealed and machined
One billet of aluminium, hard anodised, gasketed to IP68 and tested at three metres of water.
